Enugu sex hawker dies after marathon with customers

ENUGU—THE Enugu State Police command through operatives of the Udenu Division has commenced investigations into an alleged incident of murder in which a commercial sex worker was allegedly killed in a brothel after a marathon sex with a customer.

It was gathered that around midnight on October 24, the customer, identified as Ikechukwu Oga had gone to a brothel at Obolloafor, in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State where he met with the sex hawker, Roseline and had a sex deal.

Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, DSP, confirmed the incident in a statement made available to newsmen, explaining that the suspect after a bargain with the deceased, agreed to sleep together for a fee.

Death toll in Maiduguri Mosque bombing rises to 28

At least 28 people were killed in a suicide bombing at a mosque in Maiduguri, northeast Nigeria, on Friday, raising fresh security concerns after a wave of similar attacks.

The attack happened shortly after 5:00 am in the Jidari area of the Borno state capital, which has previously been targeted by Boko Haram militants.

At least 42 dead in France road crash

At least 42 people, most of them elderly, were killed when a coach collided with a lorry in southwestern France early Friday, a fire service official said.

All but one of the victims were passengers on the coach, while the other fatality was the driver of the lorry, local authorities in the prefecture of Gironde said.

New intriguing bank robbery technology in Akure

Boko Haram: 5 Abuja bombers docked, one pleads guilty

ABUJA – ‎Five alleged masterminds of the bomb blasts that rocked the Kuje and Nyanya axis of Abuja on October 2, 2015, were yesterday, arraigned before the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court.

The accused persons who were docked on a five-count terrorism charge yesterday were Abdulazeez Muhazab, Ishaka Salihu, Mohammed Jimoh, Abdulwaheed Nasiru and Abdullahi Nasiru.

After they took turns and entered their plea to the charge which was preferred against them by the federal government, trial Justice Abdul Kafarati ordered that they should be remanded in Kuje Prison.

6 Killed, 17 injured in another Maiduguri Mosque bombing

Military sources disclosed early today that a suicide bomber blew himself up inside a Mosque during the morning Islamic ‘Subhi’ Prayers in Maiduguri killing 6 persons while 17 others were injured.

Confirming the suicide attack, the National Emergency Management Agency said its rescuers evacuated six dead bodies of the victims of the early morning suicide bombing.

A senior health worker also confirmed that the 6 bodies have been deposited in the mortuary, while the 17 other injured victims are being treated in Specialist and teaching hospitals in Maiduguri.

US judge dismisses Jay Z ‘Big Pimpin” copyright case

A US judge in California on Wednesday dismissed a case against Jay Z in which the heir of an Egyptian composer said the rapper illegally used a flute sample in his hip-hop classic “Big Pimpin’.”

After a week of testimony in the copyright infringement case, in which lawyers for the plaintiff said the late composer would have been “horrified” to learn his song had been combined with “vulgar” rap lyrics to create “Big Pimpin’,” US district judge Christina Snyder dismissed the case.

PORT HARCOURT—Police have charged 20 pro Biafra supporters who were part of the protest by the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Monday, in Port Harcourt, among other things, for treasonable felony at a Magistrate’s court in Port Harcourt.

Chief Magistrate Andrew Jaja remanded the suspects in prison custody and adjourned the matter to Tuesday October 27 for their counsels to argue issues bordering on their bail application.

The Sokoto State Pilgrims Welfare Agency has said that Sheikh Liman Dan-Ata, the Chief Imam of the Sultan Abubakar III Jumaa’at Mosque, Sokoto, is among those killed in the stampede in Mina, Saudi Arabia.

16-year-old Jolade (surname withheld) didn’t know she had been dating a suspected cult member until the unexpected happened to her.

Whenever she remembers the ugly experience she allegedly went through in the hands of her boyfriend and three of his friends, she curses the day she met him.

Jolade was said to have been gang-raped by four suspected cultists including her boyfriend of over two years, Oluwole Seyi, 18.

Another girl, Tawa (surname withheld), said to be the girl friend of one of the other suspects, was also not spared as the boys allegedly had carnal knowledge of her in quick succession.

Orders INEC to conduct re-run

ABUJA—The Akwa Ibom State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal, sitting in Abuja, yesterday, cancelled the governorship election results in 18 local government areas, LGAs, in the state. A three-man panel of Justices at the tribunal, headed by Justice Ishaq Umar, ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to conduct re-run elections in the affected LGAs.

The tribunal said it was satisfied that a total of 566, 436 voters in the areas were disenfranchised during the governorship election that held in the state on April 11, 2015. According to the tribunal, section 108(2) of the Electoral Act, empowered it to, in view of circumstances that surrounded the governorship election in the 18 LGAs, nullify the outcome and order INEC to organise a re-run.

Specifically, it listed the LGAs where INEC must conduct a re-run poll as: Etim-Ekpo, Uyo, Ibesikpo, Onna, Ikono, Oruk-Anam, Uruan, Ibeno, Ibiono Ibom, Nsit-Ibom, Nsit-Ubium, Ini, Oron, Nsit-Atai, Etinan, Udung-Uko and Eket.

Though the petitioners, the All Progressives Congress, APC, and its governorship candidate in Akwa Ibom State, Chief Umana Okon Umana, alleged that the governorship poll was fraught with manifest irregularities, the tribunal, maintained that the alleged electoral anomalies and non-compliance with the Electoral Act, were not enough to warrant outright nullification of election results from all the 31 LGAs in the state.

“This petition partly succeeded. INEC is hereby ordered to conduct a re-run election in 18 LGAs. There will be no order as to cost. Parties are to bear their cost,” the tribunal ruled.

Preliminary objections: Earlier, the tribunal dismissed preliminary objections that were raised against the petition by Governor Udom Emmanuel and his party, the PDP.

Several feared trapped, 5 rescued from collapsed 3-storey building in Lagos

LAGOS—‘’My sister called me that she was under the debris, by the staircase, that was at about 2:30pm. Later, she called again to say that the place was very hot and that she was getting weak. She is still there struggling for breath. But the rescue workers are unable to get to where she is.’’

This was the distraught reaction of Mercy, a relative whose sister was trapped in the three-storey building that collapsed yesterday at Odunfa Street, CMS, on Lagos Island.

Aside from Mercy’s sister, several others are still feared trapped in the building.

However, five persons, including an 80-year-old woman and a 15-year-old boy, were rescued from the rubbles of the collapsed building at about 1:45pm.

ABUJA — AHEAD of today’s screening of former Governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi; Senate Majority Leader, Senator Ali Ndume, yesterday, lampooned senators elected on the platform of his former party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, saying that the 8th Senate belongs to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

According to him, the PDP should note that it has become a minority, a situation where the majority would always have its way, warning that PDP cannot disqualify Amaechi based on what he described as triviality instead of the constitution. He added that Amaechi has not been convicted by any court of law.

Ali Ndume boasted that the Senators will determine the fate of Amaechi and not the report of Senator Samuel Anyanwu-led Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, adding that Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu would not have presided yesterday because APC ministerial nominees were being screened, which explained the adjournment.

KANO—It was a tragic end for a 78-year-old man, identified by police as Hassan Chiroma, when he slit his own throat at the city abattoir, Kano, yesterday.

After two days of grilling over a corruption petition concerning the eight years of his stewardship as Governor of Akwa Ibom State, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, is now weighing options on whether it had gathered enough evidence to charge Senator Godswill Akpabio to court.
An EFCC source told Vanguard, yesterday, that the commission was yet to decide if the former governor should be charged to court after interrogating him for two days, during which the Senate Minority Leader, was shown details of the expenditure, which the agency considered questionable.
However, the official, who pleaded anonymity because the commission was yet to make its position public, said that investigation on Akpabio had not been concluded and that he could still be summoned in connection with the probe being conducted by the agency.
The official said: “I can tell you that once we conclude the current phase of investigation on the former governor, we will decide if there is enough evidence to charge him to court.
“Once we are satisfied that we have a good case against him, we shall prosecute him.”

PORT HARCOURT – Supporters of the Radio Biafra broadcaster, under the umbrella the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, resident in Rivers State have stormed the city of Port Harcourt with a heavy protest demanding the unconditional release of their leader and presenter, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu.

The protesters numbering over 5000 who were split into seven groups appeared peaceful, although, chanting war songs also called for the creation of the sovereign state of Biafra.
The agitators, mainly business men and women of Igbo extraction, said it was an act of impunity for the federal government to apprehend a man who is championing the cause of his people.

MANY monuments have been built in honour of the man Bola Tinubu. He is acclaimed as the political genius of our times who not only engineered the taming of the PDP juggernaut, he caged it and confined it to the backwaters of Otuoke. Since the APC defeat of the PDP in the presidential election, Tinubu the tactician has been feted, celebrated and praised to high heavens. But all these encomiums have proved to be highly exaggerated.

The truth of the matter is that Tinubu, the veritable Jagaban of Borgu, is a master of political illusion. He is remarkable for the distinction of characteristically pulling defeat out of the jaws of putative victory. He mid-wifed the birth of the APC, only to be shut out of its vice-presidential sweepstakes. He engineered APC”s victory at the centre, only to see his arch-enemies take over the posts of Speaker and Senate President in the National Assembly. He piggy-backed Buhari to the presidency, only to be shut out of a say in the president’s cabinet nominees.

Tinubu is called the National Leader of the APC when there is no such post in the party’s Constitution. When a critical meeting of APC bigwigs was called to address the party’s imbroglio in the National Assembly, the “National Leader” could not attend because, in actual fact, he is not even a member of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party.

President Muhammadu Buhari has been asked to urgently save his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), from sliding into crisis by reversing some of the nomination for ministerial positions he made.

A statement yesterday, by a group, Save Democracy Contingent (SDC), alleged that some of the nominees were not members of the APC but got their appointments because they have relationships with a “cabal” within the Presidency and therefore do not merit their appointments.

The group in the statement jointly signed by its President, Ade Ibitutu, and other officials, namely Ahmed Jibrin, Okon Eta and Chijioke Nkwocha, alleged that Zainab Ahmed, the nominee from Kaduna, was nominated because she is a cousin to the state governor, Nasir El- Rufai, adding that Aisha Abubakar was allegedly nominated for being the daughter of Abubakar Alhaji and niece of Mamman Daura.

ABUJA—The Presidency and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday engaged in war of words over President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption crusade following the grilling of former Akwa Ibom State Governor and Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

The opposition party while describing the anti-graft war as selective and a sham, said President Buhari is a dictator and urged him, if he is sincere, to go after former All Progressives Congress, APC governors, who had petitions against them for alleged corruption.
